Deceased was fatally injured at the Merton's Reward Gold mine from two fractures at the base of the skull with associated shock. There was apparently nothing in the post mortem on which to diagnose fume poisoning. It was the examining doctor's opinion that the deceased was not in good health at the time of the accident, that he was suffering from pleurisy. On the morning of the accident, the deceased was at the 510 ft level and there was some discussion about the air. Deceased said he would come up again. About three or four feet from the landing, deceased suddenly let go and fell to the bottom of the winze, a distance of about 42 feet. Deceased was then taken to Malcolm on the mine cart. He was unconscious and died about 11 miles from Malcolm, near Pig Well.
Official cause of death was Febris Enterica (typhoid) and exhaustion. The informant of her death was her father, Henry Albert Taylor.
Deceased spent 16 years in South Australia and Western Australia.

The deceased left his home and family in Victoria in 1907 to look for work and many of the letters he wrote to his wife and family survive to this day in the hands of a descendant. One reads " ... I am writing this in my own lonely little hut. I am not boarding now so will be able to write often. My hut is about the size of our front room. Wattle and daub and a good fireplace and all whitewashed. A big fire is burning bright and I have just finished tea and toast and cake and meat ..."
