Cause of Death: Mine Accident - Fracture to base of skull

The deceased left England at 3 years of age, spent 12 years in New Zealand and 15 years in Victoria before moving to Western Australia. He had been working at the Bellevue Gold Mine Battery for seven years when he and Mr. Blaney, the Battery Manager, were examining a belt that had been lying idle for about nine months. Mr. Blaney was holding the belt at the pulley end and he told Reid to hold the other end. The belt was saturated with oil that had been dripping on it all the time the belt had been lying idle. The belt caught on the pulley at the end Reid was holding, dragging him in head first. The acting manager sent an urgent wire to Lawlers for a doctor. Reid was taken home about 10 o'clock at night, and next day, his wife took him to the Lawlers Hospital, a distance of about 32 miles. There, he was found to be suffering from a fracture to the base of the skull, a broken collar bone and considerable abrasions and injuries, but he died on February 24, never having regained consciousness from the time of the accident. No inquest was held into the death, which caused considerable angst to his widow . Sadly., on 18th December that same year, and just 10 months after the mine accident that claimed his father's life, while engaged in repairs to the belt in the engine room, Reid's son, Charles Augustus, ascended the roof and fell through the corroded sheet iron and onto the driving wheel. He was an apprentice fitter at the same mine as his father had worked. The lad died as a result of the fall. He was aged 18 years. The deceased is buried in Plot 28, Section C, Roman Catholic section of Lawlers Cemetery.

Cause of Death: Suicide by Razor

Deceased was found in his tent when a fellow bricklayer went to look for him on Saturday, the 14th between 3 and 4 o'clock in the afternoon. When he opened the door of the tent he saw the body lying right across the bunk with the head hanging over one side and the legs over the other. There was blood on the clothes and pillow. As he approached the body, the deceased's dog jumped on the body and prevented further examination. The local medical practitioner made a post mortem examination at the hospital on the 16th and found in the region of the front of the neck two incisions close together, the first one was about half an inch long and about three eighths of an inch deep, the second one was 5in long and two and a half inches deep. In the opinion of the medical practitioner, death was due to loss of blood, arising from a wound in the neck; that a wound such as that on the deceased could only be self-inflicted. An inquest was held two days later. The jury found that deceased came to his death by cutting his throat with a razor while in a low demented state. The deceased was buried in Plot 02, Section C, 1st front row of the cemetery.

The top and back portion of the head was blown off and the left hand (apparently used to hold the fracture in place until it exploded), with the exception of the thumb, was also missing. There was a bottle containing whisky near the bunk and a short note which did not shed any light on the cause of the man's distress. The jury at the inquest returned a verdict of "suicide whilst in a fit of temporary insanity". The deceased had lived for 35 years in Victoria. He is buried in Plot 01, Section B, north-east corner of Lawlers Cemetery.

Upon further investigation, he found the body of the deceased floating in the well. Dr A.J.J. Triado, Medical Practitioner at Lawlers, upon conducting a post mortem examination, determined that the body had been in the water between eight and sixteen hours and that death was due to asphyxia. In October and November of 1909, a Missing Persons item appeared in several Perth, Coolgardie and other goldfields newspapers, searching for a JOHN RUANE, who was last heard of in Coolgardle, near Perth, Australia, and who was tho son of Mary and Edward Ruane, of Cultibo, near Kiltimagh, Co. Martin RYAN (more)

Cause of Death: Broken Neck

Deceased lived for 26 years in Victoria before moving to Western Australia. At the time of his death, Martin had a brother named John, who was working at Lake Way as a tool sharpener, and a sister living in Sydney. On the round of the underground manager at 10pm on 10 April, there was apparently nothing noticeable in the stope where deceased was working, to cause alarm, but on a later inspection it was found that a large body of earth had fallen, under which Ryan was pinned. On this being removed, the unfortunate man was discovered in a lifeless state. It was estimated that about six tons of earth and rock had fallen. It was later established that the cause of death was that the neck was broken. There were other injuries such as a dislocation of the left clavicle, the fifth rib was broken, and there may have been internal injuries. The medical officer examining the body did not hold a post mortem examination but he declared that the injuries could have been caused by a fall of earth or stone striking the deceased. Ryan was in the No. 1 level, under the No. 8 pass. He was instructed to go and shovel the stone broken in the stope down the No. 8 pass. He was then left. The shift came off at midnight but he missed the time check. He had been last seen alive at 11pm. A search began and his coat and billy were found half way down the hill which led to the discovery of his lifeless body. Martin is buried in Plot 28, Section A, Roman Catholic section of Lawlers Cemetery.
