Samuel TOGNOLINI (more)

Cause of Death: Explosion of Dynamite

The fatal accident occurred at the East Murchison United mine through the premature explosion of some gelignite with which Tognolini was charging a hole. At the East Murchison United Mine, an Italian named Giovanni Piantoni was working on the 30th November at the No. 4 level, along with Tognolini, who commenced putting a hole in the face and then went up to get some fracture. After coming back he told Piantoni to get two packets of dynamite and five lengths of fuse. Piantoni remarked that the hole was too small and that the plugs would not go in. Tognolini told Piantoni that he had put two plugs in the hole and then commenced to tamp them. He was using a wooden tamping stick and had only tamped twice when the charge blew out. At the inquest, the Inspector of Mines, Mr J Crabb, stated that in his opinion, the accident was caused either by a concussive blow or through particles of quartz or some other hard substance adhering to the tamping bar and thus creating friction which resulted in the conducting of a spark to the explosive. Tognolini and Piantoni were both admitted to the hospital. Deceased was suffering from burns of the skin on the abdomen, chest, neck, and both arms. The extent of the injuries to the surface of the skin was large, and his condition was grave. He was unconscious while in hospital, but regained consciousness for a while. He again became unconscious and delirious and died at 6 pm. Cause of death was high temperature and the absorption of poison from the wounds, which led to heart failure. The wounds could have been caused through an explosion of dynamite. The deceased died at 6pm on the Monday night and was buried at midnight on the Tuesday night amid considerable disquiet about the practice of midnight burials taking place. The deceased was buried in Plot 38, Section C, in the 5th row west.
