Cause of Death: Meningitis

Peter Leo Byrne was the 14th child to be born to the Irish couple, James and Mary Byrne, who married in Perth on 11 September 1892 (Marriage Reg.No.273/1892). Their first, a son, died aged 5 days at Southern Cross. The second, also a son, died at 3 months. Then followed 8 girls and 3 more boys before Peter Leo was born. It is not known if there were any further children added to this family after Peter.

A post mortem examination was held on the body of the deceased by Dr R. Palmerston Rundle, M.B., B.S. (Melb.). The death was certified to in writing by Kathleen Scolland Carobbio, wife, Comet Vale. Witnesses to the burial were R. Carlile and C.L. Williams.

Cause of Death: Heart Failure, Broncho Pneumonia, Pleurisy

The death was certified in writing by D.J. Walsh, friend, Comet Vale. Witnesses to the burial were D. Meagher and John Young. The deceased had lived in New South Wales for 29 years.

For some time past, the deceased had not appeared to be in robust health and, only a few days before his death, was compelled to take to his bed. Complications set in and, despite attention by Dr. Allan and the untiring services of relatives and friends, he passed
away at 3 am on Friday. The deceased was an old and highly respected resident of Comet Vale and had been on the goldfields for a considerable number of years. He was a native of Bourke, N.S.W. He started his career as a bank clerk in that State. Coming to West Australia, he occupied the positions as accountant for the Hit and Miss Gold Mine (Mulgarrie), Woodley's Reward G.M. (Rothsay), Beard and Timms (Menzies), Golden Butterfly (Tampa), Messrs. Suttcliffe Bros., storekeepers (Coolgardie) and latterly, at the Happy Jack. G.M.
(Comet Vale).
In local affairs the deceased was always foremost towards the advancement of the town and was always ready and willing to assist in any charitable movement.
He was a member of the local progress committee for a lengthy time and, for a term, was chairman of that body.
The funeral took place on Friday afternoon.

The death was certified to in writing by A. Dawson, husband, Comet Vale. Witnesses to the burial were C.L. Williams and E. Schmidt. The deceased had lived in Victoria for 24 years before arriving in Western Australia.

She died 18 days after giving birth to a daughter.

Cause of Death: Mining Accident - Suffocated under a Fall of Sand

Known as Tony.

His death was certified in writing by A Epis, brother-in-law, Boulder.

Epis, who was working in a winze between the No. 4 and 5 levels in the Sand Queen mine at Comet Vale on Saturday, was buried beneath a quantity of sand and suffocated. He was engaged shovelling sand to three other men about 10 ft. below and was last seen at about 8.30 am. No one witnessed the fall of sand and nothing was known of this happening until about 10 am when the moving sand carried the unfortunate man's body down to where the others were working. The body was taken to the surface, where efforts were made to restore animation but without success. A doctor was summoned, but was not able to reach the mine until four or five hours later. Epis' wife and family were residing in Italy at the time of his death.

His wife died of acute enterocolitis and heart disease in January 1908.

The deceased had been suffering from tuberculosis for 5 months before his death. The death was certified to in writing by Peter Henderson, brother. The burial was witnessed by Peter Henderson.

Edith Rebecca HOLMES (more)

Cause of Death: Premature Birth

The death was certified to in writing by Ernest Holmes, father, Comet Vale. Witnesses to the burial were Ernest Holmes and John Hill.

The child's mother died 23 November 1914 of acute dysentery and chronic pneumonia, when Edith was just 9 days of age.  Sadly, she did not survive long after her mother's death.

Lucretia Marion (MOORE) HOLMES (more)

Cause of Death: Acute Dysentery, Chronic Pneumonia

Mrs Holmes suffered dysentery supervening on chronic pneumonia after a premature confinement, coupled with exhaustion. The child, Edith Rebecca, died 4 days after the mother's death.  She was aged 13 days and is featured in this website.

The death of Mrs Holmes was certified in writing by Ernest Holmes, husband, Comet Vale. Witnesses to the burial were E.C. Chambers and N. Devereux.

The deceased spent 20 years in Victoria before moving to Western Australia.

The death was certified to in writing by Martin Houlahan, father, Comet Vale. Witnesses to the burial were E.J. Saunders and J.T. Kaley. The child's parents were married at Mt Morgans in 1905 (Marriage Reg.No.1018/1905).

The child was the second-born of twins, prematurely born. Samuel suffered cardiac failure. The child's twin, Freda J (Birth Registration 18/1919) survived. The parents were married in 1914 (Marriage Registration 2/1914, Coolgardie). Other children born to this couple were Nellie Beattie, 1914 (Birth Registration 22/1914, Coolgardie); and Samuel E.J. born 1917 (Birth Registration 70/1917, E. Coolgardie). His death was certified in writing by S. Lord, father, Comet Vale. Witnesses to the burial were Sidney Seaman and Charles Watson.

Cause of Death:

It is believed the family moved to Kalgoorlie in late 1894. On his arrival at Charters Towers, Queensland, he turned to mining and also became the proprietor of the Clubhouse Hotel before moving to Kalgoorlie in 1894 where he managed the French-owned company Pride of the Hills and Slug Hill Mines near Trafalgar. In Boulder City he opened a large grocery store and a sizeable lodging house before taking on the Kunanalling Hotel as proprietor. For a number of years he worked on the Golden Mile and around 1915, commenced mining a big gold and scheelite formation at Comet Vale. He died after a lengthy illness.
