Malcolm Cemeteries

Malcolm Salt Lake aka Raeside and Malcolm Kookynie Road

Location: Shire - Leonora
Direction - 19 kilometres South East of Leonora south of the Leonora – Laverton Road along the Malcolm Kookynie road. Malcolm town site is itself nothing these days than a bare area of flat ground. Bordering the former town site on the east now, is a modern railway siding.

Mertondale is 35 kilometres north-east of Leonora, and just east of the Leonora-Nambi Road where it turns north-east to north, if travelling from Leonora.
The former Mertondale town site borders the road but there is nothing left to see. The large north-south striking Mertondale 3-4 Gold Mine is 200 metres north. The historic Merton's Reward Gold Mine, is 100 metres south, and the three quarries mined over 100 years ago for this site can still be seen.

Mount Barnett

We marked the grave site of John McKay on 19 July 2019. His actual graveis close by and was on the eastern side of a huge Boab tree, straight across the river from the Mt Barnett homestead. His grave had a wooden fence, but the fence and that Boab has now gone and cattle have bliterated any sign of the grave. So we placed his plaque on the eastern side of this young Boab, probably 100 metres from the original.

Nobby's Well

Nobby's Well is about 30 kilometres south of Derby on the edge of the mudflats. The well was named after a racehorse called Nobby, who apparently jumped from a ship at the Derby wharf and was later found living at the fresh water soak. Nobby's Well became a stopover point for travellers to rest and get fresh water. About 5 houses sprang up, market gardens and even rice growing.
