William Henry Latrobe ST JEAN (more)

Cause of Death: Fall from a Verandah

Deceased died after an accidental fall from the verandah of his premises in Star Street, Malcolm. Senior Constable Harrop conducted the enquiry into his death. Leo Hanley, manager of Hill's Store, gave evidence that the deceased asked for his assistance to hold a ladder in the front of his house in Star street. Deceased then thought he could manage better from the rear of the building, so Hanley returned to the store. A few minutes later, he saw Latrobe lying on the footpath underneath some timber and iron. He ran to his aid and found him unconscious and groaning. Part of the verandah had broken away and St Jean had evidently fallen with it - a distance of about 12 feet. Hanley called for help and sent Frederick Nelson, a miner, to fetch Dr Robert P Hodgson, who ordered Latrobe (as the deceased was known) to be taken to the hospital, where he died some 4 hours later without regaining consciousness. The cause of death was a fracture of the base of the skull and intra-cranial haemorrhage. St Jean spent some years in New South Wales before moving to Western Australia. It is possible he married an Eveline SQUIRES in New South Wales and that their children were born there - but this has not been confirmed. He died with an intestate estate of £40 with £5 realty.
