Cause of Death: Suicide by cyanide

At the inquest concerning the death of John Carroll, held at the Malcolm Courthouse, Thomas Charlton, a woodcarter, said he knew the deceased, with whom he had been working. On the evening of the 10th, he and the deceased had driven from Malcolm to their camp, which was reached about 6pm. After arriving, they chatted and drank a few bottles of beer. Deceased entered a tent and returned with an enamel mug in his hand. He said, "Good-bye. We have been good friends. I've took it." I said, "Took what?" He replied, "Cyanide." He then went to his camp and laid down. I went to Whittaker and Phoebe's camp, close by, and informed them what had happened and they returned with me. When we returned, a man named McDougall was at the camp. Deceased was then alive but unconscious. I asked McDougall, who was going to Malcolm, to inform the police. I have known Carroll about nine months, during most of which time we have worked together. He had several times said he had cyanide, and would some day take it. I never saw any in his possession. I knew of no trouble that was worrying him. Thomas Charlton advised that the deceased was about half drunk but knew what he was doing. The jury returned a verdict that the deceased had met his death by cyanide poisoning, such cyanide being self-administered. The deceased left assets valued at £4.

Cause of Death: Accident - Rope Broke on the Ascending Cage

Mr G W Hall, Manager of the North Star Gold Mine, Malcolm, was informed of the accident which had taken place below the 300ft level on 5 June, which resulted in the loss of life of Mr Matthew Cobley and Colin McInnes. Down to that level the cages are provided with the usual appliances to prevent them from falling, even in the event of the rope breaking, but below 300ft, the shaft is only in the course of sinking. The rope, however, is said to have been a new one. Mr Hall says that the men killed were two of the very best he had on the mine, one of them—Mathew Cobley—having been brought by.him from South Wales. A police blunder in putting an employee of the North Star on the coroner's jury to inquire into the accident at the North Star Mine, resulting in the deaths of Mathew Cobley and Colin McInnes, a blunder which was not discovered until nearly the end of the inquiry, caused the inquest to be adjourned indefinitely. The whole proceedings were feared to be illegal and the bodies of the unfortunate men were expected to be exhumed and reviewed, and the evidence re-heard. Cobley was in the cage when the robe broke and crashed on top of McInnes, crushing him. Both men were dead when pulled out. At the final inquiry, the jury brought in a verdict of accidental death, adding to their verdict that no blame could be attached to the company.

Cody hit the man over the head with a sauce bottle and knocked him out. Next morning when the drinking had ended, the man, who had meanwhile recovered, went to Cody's camp and hit Cody over the head with a stick. It was soon realized that Cody was seriously hurt and was taken by horse and cart to the Malcolm Hospital. Cody died that evening. The man who hit Cody, Michael Griffin, was charged with manslaughter.
