Cause of Death: Paralysis of the Heart

Employed on the Princess Alix Mine, Hattley had, but a few days earlier, sent for his wife and family, who were living at Kalgoorlie, to join him at Murrin. The unfortunate woman arrived in Murrin on Monday 23 October, the evening of which the deceased was found dead outside his camp at Murrin. At the inquest held the following morning, Dr Loughran stated he had examined the body and found the heart was 'effected'. Some time previously, an operation had been performed on the deceased for the removal of hydatids. An engine-driver stated that the deceased had visited his camp on the night of the 23rd, and seemed to be in good health. A couple of hours later, he was dead. The inquest found there was no trace of violence and the jury concluded that death was due to natural causes. The informant of his death was his widow, Mary Jane Hattley.

Cause of Death: Poisoned by Accident

On the afternoon of the 1st of May, Robert Humphreys arrived in Malcolm on the coach from Menzies. The coach stopped overnight in Malcolm, and Humphreys, who suffered from chronic asthma and had a prescription from a chemist in Sydney, presented the prescription to the chemist in Malcolm. He took a dose at chemist shop and then went to the Royal Hotel (about sixty yards) but started staggering up the passageway in great pain. The doctor was called but he died within half an hour. The bottle was analyzed and found to contain cyanide of potassium instead of carbonate of ammonia. At an inquest, a verdict of manslaughter was returned and the chemist was committed for trial. After considerable evidence was presented, the jury retired for 20 minutes, then returned a verdict of not guilty, and the accused was acquitted.

Deceased lived in Adelaide, South Australia, for 15 years before coming to Western Australia where he lived in Boulder City.

Cause of Death: Heat Apoplexy

The deceased was ill for two days before his death and "died suddenly after a fit of vomiting". The area was experiencing extreme heat at that time. There followed some considerable 'discussion' via the newspapers between the coroner and two magistrates as to why the body was buried without a post mortem, yet a certificate of death was issued. Cause of death was also under discussion, with even poisoning being suggested.

The child's parents were married in Kanowna in 1903 (Marriage Reg.No.552/1903). Both parents were born in Bendigo, Victoria. The child had an older sibling, Myrtle Thelma, born 1903 (birth Reg. No. 1993/1903) in Kanowna.

Deceased had lived previously in South Australia and Victoria. The deceased made a fair living as a laundress but apparently gave everything she earned to the Roman Catholic church for when she died, the cost of her. burial was defrayed from subscriptions gathered in the town.

Cause of Death: Delerium Tremens and Pneumonia

The deceased was a well-known personality in Malcolm. It was believed he contracted pneumonia some three months before, when he spent a bitter night in the bush, having lost his way in the mulga whilst en route to East Lynne. He was a brother of Mr Ker, of the British Embassy staff under Sir Claude MacDonald during the siege of Peking. The funeral was attended by members of the public and the Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member.

Henry died on the Saturday at 5am and was buried that same afternoon. He had been an inmate of the Malcolm Hospital for five weeks. He had been suffering from consumption for some time and acting on medical advice, came to Australia for the benefit of his health. In Australia, he was involved in mining, with shares in the Dumbarton mine.

Richard owned the "Royal" at Malcolm and advertised it as the leading hotel on the Mt. Margaret Goldfields, with water laid on, hot and cold baths, a piano and good stables available for horses.

Cause of Death: Acute Peritonitis & Heart Failure following mine accident

William Langford, employed on the Young Australian claim, was engaged sinking a new shaft, and at a depth of 4ft had drilled two holes, and charged them. He lit the fuse of the first charge, and lost too much time in lighting the other. The charge exploded while he was in a kneeling position, and blew him clean out of the shaft. One leg was smashed to a pulp, and he was generally battered about all over. Everything possible was done to assist the unfortunate man and to staunch the bleeding. The patient was placed on a stretcher in a cart, and driven off to the Malcolm Hospital where he survived for 3 days subsequent to the accident.

Deceased had lived in New South Wales for 20 years. He was married twice. First marriage was in Liverpool at the age of 20 years. James Laycock, was one of the oldest residents of the Malcolm district. He apparently went to the lavatory and shortly afterwards a terrific explosion was heard. The officials, on proceeding to investigate, found Laycock in a shattered condition. One hand held a plug of dynamite and the other a fuse. He had been in ill-health for some time past and had become despondent in consequence of his inability to work. He suffered from chronic heart disease for about 5 years and had difficulty sleeping
