Cause of Death: Mine Accident - Fractured Vertebrae

This young man was married for just four months when he met with his fatal accident. James Michael Touhy was born in Ireland in 1834. His wife, also Irish, was born in 1836. Their family of five boys and four girls were spread between 1862 and 1876. They were: Mary Catherine Cecelia born 1862; Michael James born 1864; Margaret Josephine born 1865; Elizabeth Ann born 1868, died 1870; John born 1871; Charles born 1873; Annie Elizabeth born 1874; James born 1876.

Ann died in 1931 in Horsham, Victoria. Her husband died in 1881. Young Robert Patrick Ambrose is buried in Plot 31 of the Roman Catholic portion of the Kookynie Cemetery.

Cause of Death: By Self-inflicted Bullet Wound

The deceased had lived in South Australia for 32 years before moving to Western Australia. Her father died 18 June 1868, just two months after she was born. On 9 May 1844, he had married Agnes Davidson in Sydney.

At the Coroner's Inquest held at Kookynie on 25 May 1910, by J. Leipold, J.P. Acting Coroner, it was the verdict of the jury that the deceased died from the effect of a revolver bullet wound self-inflicted. Emma had only been married seven months before her death. Emma was known in Kookynie as Nurse Wood. She left an estate valued at £105 to her husband, William James Alexander Walker.

Alice Priscilla Denning and Patrick George Walsh married in Victoria in 1903 (Marriage Registration 853/1903). Their other children were John born 13 March 1904, died 14 March 1904 at Kookynie, aged 10 hours; Eileen Beronica born 1905 at Kookynie. The father of these children, Patrick George, had sent his wife home to Victoria to her family when he died in Sandstone in 1907.

Cause of Death: Premature Birth

The child's parents were married in Victoria in 1903 (Marriage Registration 853/1903). Their son, Herbert Patrick, was born about 1902 in Colac, Victoria, and died in 1903. This deceased child was born and died in 1904 in Kookynie and then another child, Eileen Beronica (this is the spelling as appears in the Birth Registration), was born 1905 in Kookynie. The children's father, Patrick, died in 1907 (Death Registration 47/1907, Coolgardie) and their mother married Joseph Bailey on 17 Jul 1912 in Caulfield, Victoria. There were a further three children born to this marriage.

Louisa had lived in Victoria for 25 years before arriving in Western Australia.

Cause of Death: Cardiac Failure, Pneumonia following Enteric Fever

Tom Watson succumbed to a bout of pneumonia which followed enteric fever. After spending some time on the Mt. Morgan goldfield, Queensland, Watson turned his attention to West Australia 12 years before his death. With a fellow countryman, Mr. Joseph Caddy, he was associated in mining pursuits and in business at Tampa, then known as Dingo Creek. After the death of his wife, Ethel Costello, in 1900 (Ethel Maud, nee COSTELLO, died April 1900; Death Registration 414/1900), Mr. Watson returned to England and while there, was appointed to a position in a mining district in West Africa . Six years ago, Mr. Watson returned to Kookynie and entered into possession of the Commercial Hotel, which he ran until his death.

The deceased took an active part in every institution which was for the benefit of the town and district, being a councillor, a member of the school board, president of the Racing Club and vice-president of the Gun Club. He was a liberal supporter of local syndicates for the advancement of the mining industry. Mr. Watson's death was a distinct loss to the community. He was held in high respect and was an exemplary citizen in every sense of the word.

The deceased, who had only just passed his 39th birthday, left a widow and an infant daughter by his second marriage. At the funeral of the late Tom Jackson Watson, the cortege moved from the Commercial Hotel, Kookynie, at 2.30pm. The business places of the town were closed. The funeral was the largest seen in the district. The local Masonic bodies turned out to a man and preceded the hearse. After the hearse, nearly 200 men followed, as well as the children from the school and about 35 vehicles bringing up the rear. Mr S. Fleming read the Masonic service at the grave. Tom Watson left an estate valued at £1105 12s 1d to Adeline Watson.

The child's parents were married in Victoria in 1901 (Marriage Registration 7196/1901). After the birth and death of John Allan in 1903, the couple moved back to Victoria and had a further two children. They were: Allan Herbert born 24 February 1905, Caulfield, Victoria; William John born 1913 in Coburg. Annie also came from Victoria. She died in 1942 in Malvern and her husband died there in 1961.

Charles Wilkinson had been suffering for 9 months before his death. He was the holder of a Gallon Licence for premises known as Kennedy's Store, on Town Lot 50, Kookynie. In May 1919, he applied to the courts to move the premises to Lot 5 at Kookynie.

It is believed Mr Wilkinson came from a family of 9 daughters and 2 sons. The parents were married in Yorkshire, England in 1843 and migrated to Australia in 1853 with their five daughters on the "Marion Moore", arriving in Melbourne on 9 March 1854. Charles spent 30 years in Victoria before moving to Western Australia. He left an estate valued at £840 to his wife, Jessie.

The child is buried in the Anglican portion of the Kookynie Cemetery, Plot number 20. The child's parents married in 1896 in Fremantle.  Their first child was stillborn in 1899.  Then a daughter, Edith Lillian, was born in Fremantle in 1901 (Birth Registration 2031/1901, Fremantle).  Olive was their second daughter.
