Cause of Death: Senility, Chronic Bronchitis, Mitral Disease

The deceased had lived in South Australia for 30 years before moving to Western Australia. He left an estate valued at £130 to his daughter, Caroline Cogan (nee Curtis).

The deceased's mother, Caroline Hambley, was born in 1807 in Plympton, Devon, England. She married James Curtis on 4 April, 1836 at Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. He was born in 1809 in Gwennap, Cornwall, England. James was the eldest of their four known children. The others were: Caroline born 1838; Blanch born January 1840; William John Henry born 1846. Their father died in October 1885 and their mother the following year.

The child's parents were married at Kookynie in 1904 (Marriage Registration 518/1904). The deceased child was buried in the Presbyterian portion of the Kookynie Cemetery, Plot number 10.

Cause of Death: Rheumatic Fever, Heart Failure

The deceased had been suffering from Rheumatic Fever and the subsequent heart condition for over 7 months before his death. He had spent his first 30 years living in Victoria before moving to Western Australia.

Battista John De Piazza senior was born 4 August 1846 at Grosotto, Sondrio, Lombardia, Italy. He was a farmer and migrated to Melbourne on 13 March 1864 on the "S.M.Vittorio", accompanied by 2 cousins, Trinca and Robastelli. They walked from Melbourne to Wandiligong where they worked in the gold mines. He married Catherine O'Brien 11 October 1870 in Beechworth, Victoria (Marriage Registration 3931/1870). She was born in 1852 at Forest Creek, Mt Alexander, Victoria, and worked as a servant prior to her marriage. The couple proceeded to grow their family of 14 children between the years of 1870 and 1898. There were 8 girls and 6 boys, of which Baptista was the second eldest.

Battista senior died two years after his son, on 10 September 1908 at Myrtleford, Victoria, from influenza, leaving a wife and 11 children. His wife died 23 October 1939 at Orange Grove, Mudgegonga, Victoria.

Cause of Death:

The child's parents were married in Menzies in 1902 (Marriage Registration 549/1902). Other children born to this couple were James Leonard born 1 February 1904 in Adelaide (Birth Registration 725/263, Adelaide) and Eileen Eleanor, born 1905 in Fremantle (Birth Registration 3073/1905). Eileen Eleanor died in 1906 in Fremantle (Death Registration 31/1906, Fremantle).

Cause of Death: Mitral & Aortic Heart Disease

Horace had only suffered from his heart disease for some 24 hours before his death.  Norah had pre-deceased him on 15 September 1903 at 394 Chapel St, South Yarra, Victor.   

Horace's mother, Alice, was born in 1831 at West Ham, Essex, England. She married David Derrick, a mariner, on 30 April 1857 at Tower Hamlets, Mile End Old Town St Peter, England. They migrated to Australia, arriving 20 August 1857 at Port Phillip Bay, and their first child, Alice Mary, arrived in 1858 at Stanley, in Victoria. Horace was next, followed by Phoebe Ann in 1861 and Henry John in 1863. David died 16 April 1902 at Beechworth Hospital, Victoria, just days before his 70th birthday. His wife died 6 June 1906 at Huntly, Victoria, two days before she was due to turn 75 years of age.

The child had lived in South Australia for 3 months before the family moved to Western Australia. The child's father, Thomas Cuthbert Dodge, was born 17 November 1862 at Robe, South Australia (Birth Registration 25/611 Robe).  He died 15 November 1919 in the Wellington district of Western Australia (Death Registration 144/1925, Wellington).

Cause of Death: Marasmus, Whooping Cough

The child had been suffering from marasmus and whooping cough for four weeks prior to her death.

The child's father, Samuel Pruden Watson Doe, was born 28 November 1861 in Woodstock, Paget, Bermuda. By 1900 he had migrated to Australia and married May Jane Gertrude Miller at Broken Hill, New South Wales, in 1900 (Marriage Registration 966/1900, Broken Hill). She was born in 1875 and the couple began their family of six girls and three boys, of which Margaret Kennedy was the fifth child in the family. Her siblings were Thelma Maud born Tampa 1900 (Birth Registration 1568/1901); George Alphonsus born 1903; Joseph William Stanley born Tampa 1906 (Birth Registration 138/1906, North Coolgardie); Mary Miller born Tampa 1908 (Birth Registration 44/1908, North Coolgardie); Maud Josephine  born Kookynie 1912 (Birth Registration 20/1912, North Coolgardie); Arthur Francis born 1915; Jeanne Elizabeth Marie born Victoria Park 1919 (Birth Registration 511/1919).

Samuel died 30 June 1944 at Pinnaroo, South Australia, his wife on 29 November 1958 at Rose Park.

Cause of Death: Cirrhosis of Liver, Ascites, Bronchitis, Heart Failure

Frank John Doidge resided in Kookynie for three or four years prior to his death at the hospital. He was at one time Warder at the Kookynie hospital and was a British Navy pensioner. The funeral was largely attended. The body was buried in the Anglican portion of the Kookynie Cemetery, Plot number 26.

As stated in the State Records Office documents, Frank John's siblings, Mary Jane and William Henry, featured in the settlement of his estate.

Cause of Death: Haemorrhage after Circumcision (Haemophilia), Exhaustion

The little chap apparently suffered from Haemophilia which caused excessive blood loss when he was circumcised. Little Alfred appears to have been the youngest of six children born to Elizabeth and Timothy Donovan. His siblings were Mary Ellen born 1896 in Melbourne; John Patrick born 19 February 1899 in Menzies (Birth Registration 1158/1899); Annie Elizabeth born 1901 in Kookynie (Birth Registration 1621/1901); Margaret Veronica born 21 August 1903 in Kookynie (Birth Registration 1929/1903); Samuel Timothy born 1906 (Birth Registration 77/1906, North Coolgardie). Another son, born 1897, died a short time after birth.

The deceased is buried in Plot number 36 of the Roman Catholic portion of the Kookynie Cemetery.

Cause of Death: Silicosis

The deceased had suffered from that debilitating lung disease for 4 years before his death. John Duncan was born 4 May 1827. He married Mary Janet Davidson at Beechworth, Victoria in 1855. She was born March 1837 in London and arrived in Geelong, Victoria, on 20 November 1852. Together, they produced a family of 13 children. The 5 girls and 8 boys were: Annie born 1856; John born 1858; Margaret born 1859; Mary born 1861; William born 1862; Archibald born 1864; Hugh born 1865; David born 1867; Alexander born 1869; Robert George born 1871; Andrew born 1872; Janet born 1875; Jessie born 1877.

The children's father died 28 December 1905 at Ballarat, their mother on 19 June 1914 in Perth. She is buried in Karrakatta Cemetery. Alexander is buried in Plot 35 of the Presbyterian portion of the Kookynie Cemetery.

William Thomas DUNKLEY (more)

Cause of Death: Crushed by Fall of Earth

The deceased had been employed at the Champion Gold Mine since his arrival in Kookynie. Dunkley went into a stope at No. 8 level at 8 o'clock In the morning with three mates. Dunkley remarked that the night shift had left the hanging-wall in a rather dangerous way and that he would get a bar and knock some of the stuff down before starting work. He turned to get a bar and, as he did so, a stone (weighing about 8cwt.) fell on him. When the stone was removed, Dunkley was dead. The deceased had been in the district for about three months. Dunkley's parents married in Perth in 1870 (Marriage Registration 3079/1870, Perth). They had two children, William and a daughter named Frances Mary born in Perth in 1875, who married Thomas Hatch in 1889 at Dandaragan and died in 1907. Ellen Dunkley (nee Day) then married Henry James Dennis in 1875 and a further four children were born to that couple. Little is known of William Thomas Dunkley's life before he arrived in Kookynie.

The deceased had lived in South Australia for 18 years before arriving in Western Australia. Mr Edwards was one of five children born in Kapunda, South Australia, to Mary and William Edwards. The others were: William Samuel born 13 November 1868; Rose born 7 July 1870; Agnes born 31 December 1873; Edith born 28 July 1875.

The child's parents were married in Kalgoorlie in 1897 (Marriage Registration 206/1897, Kalgoorlie). Their other children were Albert Thomas Coventry born 1898; Dorothy Gladys born 1904;

Thomas Coventry Elliott was born 5 March 1871 at Sandhurst, Sandridge, Victoria. His wife was born about 1875 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Roy Stanley was the fourth of their 13 children born between 1898 and 1917.  At least ten of the children were born in Kookynie.  Their other children were Albert Thomas Coventry born 1898 in Coolgardie (Birth Registration 548/1898; Ivan George born 17 October 1901 (Birth Registration 144/1901, Broad Arrow); Dorothy Gladys born 1904 in Kookynie (Birth Registration 2011/1904); Robert John born 4 February 1907, Kookynie (Birth Registration 36 /1907, North Coolgardie); James Edgar born 24 March 1910 in Kookynie (Birth Registration 37/1910, North Coolgardie); Eva Myrtle born 1911 in Kookynie (Birth Registration 69/1911, North Coolgardie); William Simon 3 August 1912 in Kookynie; William Henry born Kookynie (Birth Registration 12/1913, North Coolgardie) possibly a twin to Mabel Iris born 4 March 1913 at Kookynie (Birth Registration 13/1913, North Coolgardie); then another set of twins, Frederick Alexander and Sydney Ronald born 4 November 1915 (Birth Registrations 37/1915 and 38/1915, North Coolgardie).  The family lists another child, Agnes Laura, who was born in Coolgardie in 1917 - but no birth registration has been found for that child.

Thomas died 9 January 1934 at Como in Perth and his wife died there 15 August 1955. The couple are buried together at Karrakatta Cemetery.
