Biography

George Jeremy was found dead at the bottom of a slight underlay shaft about eight miles from Kookynie. There was a revolver by his side and he had a bullet wound through the heart. It was apparently a case of suicide. Jeremy had been dead about three days. The Coroner, Mr. J. E. Geary, deputed Mr. W. Bright, J.P, of Kookynie, to conduct an inquest into Jeremy's death. It was supposed that the deceased died instantaneously by being shot through the region of the heart by a revolver bullet, self-inflicted. An inquest was held and an order for burial given by William Bright, J.P. Acting Coroner. Jeremy had been prospecting in the Butterfly district for the past year or so and he had got two or three rich crushings from a leader but the gold had evidently cut out, for he had not got any since the previous December. The body was in an underlay shaft, half a mile away from Jeremy's old show. He died intestate with a small amount to his credit in the National Bank at Leonora. Nothing was known as to his relatives. Jeremy worked as a prospector and miner for many years in the Westonia district. He had lived in New South Wales and Queensland for 40 years before moving to Western Australia.

The deceased's father, Peter Jeremy, was born 16 August 1838 in Carmarthenshire, South Wales, United Kingdom. His wife was born 1837 in Glamorgan, Wales. They married in 1860 in Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan. They moved to Australia to begin their family in New South Wales in 1862 with the birth of their son, Christopher. Their other known children were Margaret born 1864, George born 1865 and Elizabeth born 1868. The parents both died in Liverpool, New South Wales.
