Biography

Cody had just finished a contract at the "Middlesex" Gold Mine, near Kurrajong, and he and his workmates headed for Kurrajong Hotel to celebrate. Later Cody and another man got into an argument concerning the wind-sails they had just erected over a mine shaft (for underground ventilation). Cody hit the man over the head with a sauce bottle and knocked him out. Next morning when the drinking had ended, the man, who had meanwhile recovered, went to Cody's camp and hit Cody over the head with a stick. It was soon realized that Cody was seriously hurt and was taken by horse and cart to the Malcolm Hospital. Cody died that evening. The man who hit Cody, Michael Griffin, was charged with manslaughter.
