John BEVINGTON (more)

Cause of Death: Apoplexy

Also known as John BERINGTON.

On 25 March 1850, Bevington was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment. He was transported to Western Australia on the second journey of the "Pyrenees", arriving 30 April 1853. He obtained a Ticket of Leave the following day and a Conditional Pardon on 10 February 1855. His convict number was 1734. Working as a servant to John Barron, of Tarwonga, Bevington was one of three shepherds who had worked in the Arthur River area and who are known to be buried at the 125-mile. The others are Charles Connors, who died 5 April 1877 and drowned while fishing for cobblers in the Arthur River; and John Campbell, who died on 22 August 1883. Campbell had been ailing for some time prior to his death. There is a line of unmarked graves, now barely discernible, on the western portion of the graveyard at St Paul’s, Arthur River.”

Dr Brown was appointed Hospital Assistant in 1840. Later settled in York until his wife died in 1867. He then moved with his 3 sons and daughter to the Beaufort River district where he continued to practise medicine as well as running a trading post with kangaroo skins, bartering skins from the local Aborigines. He died at the Mount and was buried on the property. In 1877, the younger sons, Charles Frederick and William George, free-holded their home (Location No 135), which became known as Mount Brown.

Lilian Rose CLARK (more)

Cause of Death: Drowning

Known as Rosie. This little child wandered from the family home with her dog and accidentally slipped off a log which had been felled to span the river, into the Hillman River near their home. It was the day of her mother's birthday.

Little Rosie was buried on the family property, "Glenbrook", Bokal in the West Arthur district, downstream from Bennett's Bridge. Her father made a fence of hand-split pickets and posts from jarrah to enclose the grave, which had a circle of white quartz rock around it. Flowers were planted on the grave, some of which still flower today. Also, five fruit trees are still to be seen, which formed part of the orchard around the house.

Miriam and Reuben Clark were married in Perth in 1906 (Marriage Registration 270/ 1906). Other children born to this couple were Reuben Stephen born 10 May 1908 (Birth Registration 46/1908, Williams); Jean Elizabeth, born 3 September 1909, Darkan (Birth Registration 178/1909, Katanning), who married in Moora in 1938 and passed away at the age of 97 years; James Albert, born 1910 (Birth Registration 180/1910, Katanning); Ellen May born 1912 (Birth Registration 172/1912, Katanning). Reuben farmed at Arthur River in 1909 and 1910, then moved to Newbridge, Darkan, near Williams. The Clark family left the area and went to live in Moora in April 1916. The property was sold to George Bennett and is now farmed by George Cuthbert. Reuben died in 1960 and Miriam in 1964.

Three years later, he was transported to Fremantle on the "William Hammond", arriving on 29 March 1856. He obtained his Ticket of Leave on 16 June 1858 and a Conditional Pardon on the 7 September 1861.
