Cause of Death: Mining Accident: Fall of Earth

Mr Thomson was accidentally killed at the No 2 open cut by a fall of earth, which caused dislocation of the spine, followed by shock. It was about 9am and he was working in an open cut mine along with James Redmond. Both men were experienced miners and had worked 4 or 5 shifts in the open cut prior to the day of the accident. Thomson was engaged in rolling large stones with a view to facilitating haulage which Redmond and a braceman were engaged in at the time. When Thomson was but a few feet from Redmond, a fall of about 3 tons of earth occurred which buried Thomson, who was heard to ask them to hurry in extricating him. Help was speedily obtained and Thomson was extricated within half an hour but life was extinct.. The grave is located on the side of a little used track around 75 kilometres south of Karratha. This lonely grave had been returning to nature until a local 4WD group decided to add a surround so that it would not be lost forever.
