Alfred WOODHOUSE (more)

Cause of Death:

This was the first recorded death at Nickol Bay. The little child was buried at Nickol Bay. The burial service was read by their friend, Robert John Sholl, Resident Magistrate. Apparently the weather was hot and dusty and most unpleasant. Only a few months later, Mrs Woodhouse herself died at the station. Little Alfred was listed on the passenger list of the Calliance on 22 November 1864, which sailed for the new Camden Harbour Settlement on the Kimberley coast, with members of the abortive Camden Harbour Pastoral Association. He was listed with his mother as "Mary 18 and infant (3 months, female)".

His mother, Eliza Ann HOPPER, married George Mortimer Woodhouse on 27 April 1864 at the Presbyterian Manse, Ballarat, Victoria, and little Alfred arrived in July of that year. He came into the world with four step siblings: Caroline, born 18 February1855; Edwin, born 20 August 1856; Fanny, born 25 November 1858; and Mary Jane born 8 December 1860, who were the children of his father's first wife, Catherine Armstrong, who died 17 December 1860. His father was an Irishman, born 29 May 1820 at Portadown, County Armagh, Ireland. He was aged 44 years when little Alfred was born. His mother, born in Heidelberg, Victoria, in 1847, was about 18 years when he was born. She died in March of 1866 and her story also appears on this website.

Eliza Ann WOODHOUSE (more)

Cause of Death: Diphtheria

Mrs Woodhouse was buried at Tien Tsin Harbour, on John Wellard's station (now known as Pyramid Station) alongside her little son, Alfred, who had died on Christmas Day a few months prior. Her coffin was made of flooring boards from Charles Edward Broadhurst's (pastoralist) cottage but decomposition had commenced some time before the coffin could be procured. Eliza Ann and her husband (who was aged 45 years when she died), left Melbourne aboard the Calliance in 1864 and sailed for the new Camden Harbour Settlement on the Kimberley coast, as members of the abortive Camden Harbour Pastoral Association. When this venture failed, they moved south (as did many other families) and settled with their five children on Wellard's station in the Roebourne area. When Eliza died she left behind four small children (Caroline born 18 February1855, Edwin born 20 August 1856, Fanny born 25 November 1858 and Mary Jane born 8 December 1860, who were her step children from her husband's previous marriage to Catherine Armstrong, who died 17 December 1860), her only son, Alfred, having pre-deceased her.
