Edward GARLAND (more)

Cause of Death: Fall of Earth

Known as Ted. Death certified in writing by AB Edman, partner in the mine, Eastern Creek. Was working alone in a shaft when about 2 tons in weight fell from the hanging wall, pinning him across the loins against the footwall and breaking his back. After about two hours of rescue efforts and imploring his rescuers to shoot him, he died within a few minutes of reaching the surface. A large tombstone is on the grave, surrounded by a fancy iron fence. His Death Certificate states cause of death as: "Shock and internal haemorrhage due to being crushed by fall of earth in mine." The deceased came to Western Australia in 1893 as a 20 year old at the height of the gold rush. In December 1897, Ted and 5 others applied for a lease on the "Enterprise" gold mine. Almost a year after Ted died, his brother, Henry, came to the Pilbara to wind up the estate of his deceased brother. The brothers had not seen each other for 22 years. Garland died intestate with assets of £518-17-10.
