Biography

The child is buried in the Roman Catholic section of the cemetery, plot number 6. The child's parents, known as Sally and Jerry, were both born in Ireland and married on 30 April 1900 in Dublin, Ireland. Their first four children were born in Ireland before they migrated to Australia, arriving in Fremantle 11 April 1907 on the "Ortona". A further 8 children were born to the couple in Western Australia. The child's father was originally a grocer who became a publican in Australia, starting with the Federal Hotel in Perth in 1907. In June 1909, he applied for, and was granted, a publican's general licence for the new premises erected in Griffiths Street, Sandstone, by Mr J.V. Kearney, who also owned the Sandstone Brewery. This was to become the Australia Hotel, where he remained as a very well-known and popular publican for a few years before moving to Geraldton where he took over the licence of the Club Hotel. He also owned a large farming property in that district. Jeremiah eventually moved to Busselton where he died aged 71 years in 1942, leaving a grown-up family of six sons and two daughters. His wife died some 10 years previously.
