When the death of young Lend occurred at the Black Range Hospital, Secretary McCarthy very considerately undertook the task of finding the deceased's parents and conveying to them the sad news. Apart from knowing that the deceased came from Sweden, Mac had little to go on but succeeded in his mission, with the result that some months later, a letter of thanks from the bereaved parents reached him from Goteberg, Sweden.
