Mr. Stacey was at work as usual and collapsed about 10 a.m. Despite artificial respiration by first-aid men on the mine and medical attention by Dr. Cashmore (who hastened to Comet Vale), the deceased passed away about mid-day. The cause of death was pronounced as heart failure. The late Mr. Stacey had suffered from heart trouble for some time and had only recently returned to Comet Vale from Leonora hospital where be had been receiving treatment. The deceased had been farming at Bridgetown before arriving in the Goldfields in January, 1934. It was assumed that being badly gassed with engine fumes a few months prior to his death had much to do with his sudden death.
