The deceased had been suffering from pneumonia and the subsequent heart failure for four days prior to his death. Mr. McCarthy was one of the pioneers in the labour movement in the state and, in the early days of the goldfields, he took a prominent part in the Ivanhoe Venture trouble. He was, at different times, connected with the A.W.U. of Queensland and New South Wales and at the time of his death he was president of the Kookynie branch of the P.L.P.
