Biography

The deceased died on Doorawarrah Station and was buried by the side of the road 7 miles west of Doorawarrah Station homestead, approximately 5 kilometres north of the highway.  He was buried by Police Constable Francis Thomas Ward (Regimental No 1120), of Carnarvon. Witnesses present at the burial were Thomas Williams, JM Smith and a tracker named Donald.

About 44 years of age, Charles married an Aboriginal woman named Nyremnyra, known as Polly.  She was the daughter of Fanny and Jimmy, an Aboriginal family.  They were married in the presence of Minnie Burk and Henry Scotts.  Polly died 4 March 1948 and is buried in the pioneer cemetery at Carnarvon.

Charles Haynes had lived in Western Australia for about 40 years in the Gascoyne region, working as a teamster, contractor and a successful gold prospector.

During the late 1890s he held the mining lease of the Eldorado gold mine.  Between 1900 and 1907, Haynes was Mine Manager at Bangemall.  After working the Gascoyne Gem gold mine, he pioneered Yalbra Station which he left to his daughter, Lily.  Lily married Thomas Maitland-Smith, a drover, on 26 September 1921, n Carnarvon.  They had five children.  She died on 20 February 1974 at Port Hedland.
