Cause of Death: Typhoid Fever

The deceased was the first death in Niagara and is buried on the road into town as the cemetery was not surveyed until 1898. The informant of his death was WF Moore Kennnedy, chemist, of Niagara. The deceased was brought in from the Sydney Mint Claim, towards Urilla, in a very bad condition, by his mates. He was left at Worthington's Hotel and died a few days after arrival. "It did not reflect much credit on them that no further steps were taken by them, and strangers had to tend and finally bury him, nor was anything heard of them again."

Cause of Death: Suicide by Gunshot

The informant of the death was George Stone, Police Constable, Niagara. A Coronial inquiry was held at Niagara on 10 April 1897. The tragic suicide of Alexander Allen came just 23 days after the death of his brother, James, from enteritis. Alexander had been working late at Mt Catherine and had apparently slept in the cemetery overnight, as a rug and saddle were found on the ground, arranged as a bed. The death of James had preyed heavily on the mind of Alexander who shot himself on his brother's grave. A revolver was found in both his hands and the wound of a bullet showed near his ear.

Cause of Death: Enteritis

The informant of the death was Frederick Nash, Secretary, Niagara Hospital. James Allen had been working as mates with G Dagenhardt, in on leases at Mt Catherine. Sadly, both died within a few hours of one another - Dagenhardt in the private Hospital and Allen in the Niagara Government Hospital. Both men were brought into town about a week before their deaths. Dagenhardt left a wife and seven children in Victoria, and it was reported that Allen left five children, who are now parentless, the mother having died some little time before.

Cause of Death: Syncope from Heart Disease

The deceased died suddenly in the bar of the Kookynie Hotel. Dr Nyulasy held a post mortem examination and found that deceased died from natural causes. The death was certified in writing by D. McDonald, Police Constable, Kookynie. He was buried by Frederick House. Witnesses to the burial were John Campbell and Michael Grace.

Cause of Death: Mine Accident - Fall of Earth

It appears that Beattie was working in the underlay shaft on the 75ft. level of the mine. His mate told him the ground was dangerous and Beattie said he would put in a piece of timber. He was engaged in this when five tons of the hanging-wall fell, killing him instantaneously. His death was certified in writing by Charles Lamb, Undertake, Kookynie. He was buried by Charles Lamb. Witnesses to the burial were John Braid and George Natt.

The deceased had been suffering for 3 days from enteritis, which led to cardiac failure. The informant of her death was her husband, TD Blair, of Yerilla. She had been in New Zealand prior to coming to Western Australia.

Cause of Death: Acute Inflammation of the lungs

Alias Muttony Bourke. Native of Ballarat having worked a number of years at Broken Hill, New South Wales also spent some considerable time in Newcastle, New South Wales where it is said that his people moved to from Ballarat. Nothing was found on him that gave any clue as to his relations or their whereabouts. The informant of the death was Louis I. Landaner, chemist, Kookynie. It was the verdict of the Coroner's jury at an inquest held at Kookynie on 7 February 1900, that the deceased died of acute inflammation of the lungs, from which he had suffered for 24 hours. Police Constable Crommelin, 419, of Kookynie Station, reported the deaths of Frederick Fenwick, alias Peacock, Joseph William McKelvie alias Jackson and John Bourke alias Muttony Bourke. 13.2.1900. The men were gassed by foul air after an explosion at the Englishmen Gold Mine Lease at Kookynie. Three men died as a result of the dynamite poisoning at Niagara. They were Joseph Jackson, John Bourke, who succumbed to the effects of the deadly fumes, and a third victim, Frederick Peacock [Fenwick] was added to the death roll. A fourth man, Llewellyn, was reported to be in a critical condition. Witnesses at the burial were Thomas Campbell and Timothy Sullivan.
