Cause of Death: Died of Thirst

Father of NJ O'Keefe, of the Grand Hotel, Mr O'Keefe left Kookynie for an alluvial rush at Tampa but nothing further was heard of him. It was surmised that he must gave gone onto the wrong track. All day, Constable Conway, assisted by a black tracker, scouted the country between but failed to find any trace of the missing man. A large party started out early the next morning. Eventually, Constable Dunkley and a black tracker found the body 20 miles from Kookynie and 15 miles east of Tampa. O'Keefe had placed his coat under his head but otherwise was fully clothed. His end was apparently peaceful but he suffered greatly from thirst during the terrible hot weather. The only thing drinkable he took with him was a bottle of ginger beer. His death was hastened by exhaustion and exposure. His death was certified in writing by George Natt, Undertaker, Kookynie. The deceased had lived in Tasmania for 54 years before arriving in Western Australia. His wife died Tasmania, 23 November 1887, aged 43 years.

Cause of Death: Mine Accident

Deceased had a sister in Sydney. He was crushed to death by a fall of earth. The alarm was given, and willing hands were quickly at work to extricate the unfortunate man from the pile of debris. After about an hour of hard work the earth was removed, but the doctor, who was in attendance, pronounced life to be extinct. He was buried at 2pm on Sunday, 5 May, 1901. Deceased had lived in Ireland for 20 years before coming to Western Australia. The death was certified in writing by Charles Lamb, Undertaker, of Kookynie, and was buried by Charles Lamb. Witnesses to the burial were E.W. Eaton and H.E.D. Peers.

Cause of Death: Acute Inflammation of the Lungs

real name Frederick Fenwick, supposed to have a brother in Cunnanalling [Kunanalling] working on the Premier Mine. Natives of Victoria. The informant of the death was Louis I. Landaner, chemist, Kookynie. It was the verdict of the Coroner's jury at an inquest held at Kookynie on 7 February 1900, that the deceased died of acute inflammation of the lungs, from which he had suffered for 36 hours. Police Constable Crommelin, 419, of Kookynie Station, reported the deaths of Frederick Fenwick, alias Peacock, Joseph William McKelvie alias Jackson and John Bourke alias Muttony Bourke. 13.2.1900. The men were gassed by foul air after an explosion at the Englishmen Gold Mine Lease at Kookynie. Three men died as a result of the dynamite poisoning at Niagara. They were Joseph Jackson, John Bourke, who succumbed to the effects of the deadly fumes, and a third victim, Frederick Peacock was added to the death roll. A fourth man, Llewellyn, was reported to be in a critical condition. Witnesses at the burial were Thomas Campbell and Timothy Sullivan.

Cause of Death: Heart Failure

A Inquest was held at Kookynie on 11 March 1903, into the death. It was the verdict of the Coroner's Jury that Rose died from a failure of the heart's action. The deceased had lived in Victoria for 25 years and had recently commenced business at Menzies as an auctioneer. It appears he left Menzies early in the morning on a bicycle, with the intention of riding to the Gladstone mine, near Jessop's Well, 29 miles to the north. The police believed he was overtaken by a severe storm, which passed over the Northern fields, and being of weak constitution, perished on the road. Deceased had been a resident of Menzies for about 12 months, and during nearly the whole of that lime, be was employed in the stores Branch of the Railway Construction Department. Previous to coming to Menzies, he was, for many months, in the Guildford or Midland Junction Hospital, and he was not by any means physically strong. The death was certified in writing by Charles Lamb, Undertaker, Kookynie. Witnesses to the burial were Eliza Rose and J. Neve.
